Ten musicians, four ensemble constellations, one Hong Kong premiere—you are warmly invited into A Chamber Dialogue. At the heart of the evening is the piano trio, as we explore how chamber music grows, stretches and transforms. Led by violinist Prof. Jue Yao—founder and artistic director of the Hong Kong String Orchestra—and pianist Niu Niu, ten musicians appear in rotating line‑ups to form four distinct ensembles, sharing the joy of conductor‑less music‑making: close‑knit, conversational and deeply human.

Spanning more than a century of European music, the programme journeys from Puccini’s operatic drama and Shostakovich’s incisive wit to Mendelssohn’s soaring Romantic lyricism and Dvořák’s heartfelt national spirit. The evening opens with a bold reimagining: Puccini’s Tosca, transformed into an intimate trio for violin, viola, and piano. Written in 1900, its iconic melodies are reborn 126 years later as a wordless chamber “song”—a Hong Kong premiere, heard one night only. Shostakovich’s Five Pieces for Two Violins and Piano follows, where lyrical ideas drawn from film and ballet are woven into concise yet colourful musical tapestries, brought to life by two violins and piano. Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, hailed as "the greatest piano trio since Beethoven," delivers the composer’s most complete and melodic expressions against the rich backdrop of D minor.

The second half takes flight with Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A Major. Lush harmonies fill the hall as five instruments blend seamlessly, evoking the landscapes of Bohemia, the warmth of the countryside, and the rhythmic vitality of folk dance. It is a radiant and uplifting conclusion to the evening.
